# What is an API?

API is the acronym for Application Programming Interface, which is a software intermediary that allows two applications to talk to each other. Each time you use an app like Facebook, send an instant message, or check the weather on your phone, you’re using an API.

## How to find the API name of a field?

> ℹ️ The user has logged in to Salesforce and has system administrator rights. For more information about logging in, click [here](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sf.basics_intro_logging_in.htm&type=5).

1. Use the gear icon (⚙) to access the setup menu.
2. In the setup menu, navigate to** “object manager”**. And search for the object related to the field you require the API name for. For example,** **the FieldBuddy **“work order” **object.
3. In the sidebar, click **Fields & Relationships**
4. Locate the “**field label”**. Check the** “Field Name” **column name value. This value is the API value for instance: FIELDBUDDY__Contact__c, FIELDBUDDY__Comments_from_Technician__c etc.
